Selim Caravanserai is a caravanserai in the Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. Vardenyanc or Orbelian qaravanatun (caravanserai) was one of the guiding points of the Silk road passing through Armenia. People accompanying caravans could lodge here and animals could find a refuge. According to an inscription at the entrance, the caravanserai was built in 1326-1327 by an order of prince Orbelian. Orbelian princely family’s coat of arms are depicted on the facade of the building. Orbelians were a wealthy dynasty and during their ruling Syunik flourished. When Mongols invaded Armenia in the middle of the XIIIth century Syunik had very little damage. Orbelians succeeded to not only take back their land from the grandson of Genghis Khan but were also freely managing the internal affairs.
