Lori Berd

The fortress town of Lori Berd is located in the Lori region of Armenia, near the city of Stepanavan, over the gorge of the Dzoraget river. It was founded in the beginning of the 11th century.

Once Lori Berd was on busy trade routes and was one of the major settlements of medieval Armenia. In 11-13 centuries the population was 10 thousand people. The first fortress wall of the city played the role of a citadel, covering a territory of 9 hectares. The fortress was built by David Anhoghin to become the capital of Kingdom of Tashir-Dzoraget in 1065.

Today the fortress is a very interesting place to visit. Attract not only historical values, but also beautiful views that open from the breakage of the fortress. Visiting the fortress can easily be included both in the program of a cultural tour, and in a hiking or even water route in Armenia.
